Meghalaya government has invested Rs 600 crore in livestock related activities to promote piggery, dairy, poultry and goatry in the State.
Chief Minister Conrad Sangma, who rolled out the piggery and milk missions in West Garo Hills district today, informed that through the two missions, the state government aims to tap the huge opportunity that will provide gainful income generation to the youth.
“Our youth and farming community can take advantage of the flagship programme of the government and reap the benefits by forming cooperative societies to venture into piggery and dairy production,” he said.
Pointing out that there is saturation in government jobs he said the government has envisioned livestock promotion activities to provide opportunities for the youth of the State to take advantage of the programme.
The piggery project amounting to Rs 209 crore is seen as India’s largest piggery programme that will enable the farming community to take up piggery farming.
During the programme, the Chief Minister handed over cheques which are zero interest loans to beneficiaries-26 piggery cooperative societies and 13 dairy cooperative societies.
The piggery mission is also aimed to meet the acute shortage. He said the state consumes about 18000 MT pork annually, with a production of just 8000 MT.
The State government has allotted Rs 6.24 crore for the piggery mission and Rs 2.17 crore for the milk mission.
