The State Central Library in Shillong has been selected as a Model Library under National Mission on Libraries (NML).
This was informed by Raja Ram Mohan Roy Library Foundation Director, Prof BV Sharma during his visit to the library today.
The NML is an initiative of the Ministry of Culture aimed at the modernisation and digital interconnection of almost 9,000 libraries throughout the country. Its primary goal is to grant readers easy access to a vast array of books and information.
The foundation on the other hand is a nodal agency of the centre to support public library services and systems and promote public library movement in the country. It also supports the library in Shillong through their various matching and non-matching schemes.
Sharma was welcomed by Director of Arts and Culture, DD Shira. He said a capacity building training programme has been scheduled from tomorrow and will run till December 2 for public library professionals in collaboration with North Eastern Hill University.
He said library professionals from Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Sikkim and Tripura will be trained in respect of modern ICT technologies for libraries, library automation etc
NML project director, Dipanjan Chattarjee who is also in Shillong to organise the programme said that 37 such trainings have been conducted throughout the country in collaboration with various universities and state governments and more than 1400 professional were trained.
