Shillong, Sep 20: The Meghalaya State Bamboo Mission marked World Bamboo Day yesterday by planting bamboo saplings in Mairang, with the goal of promoting bamboo cultivation and highlighting its importance to the state’s economy, culture, and environment.
The event, held at the Multipurpose Hall, DC Office, Mairang, brought together the Assistant Executive Commissioner of the District, L. Myrthong, officials of the Meghalaya Basin Management Agency (MBMA), local entrepreneurs, and students. A painting competition on the theme of Bamboo Day was also organized, encouraging school students to showcase their talents.
As part of the program, bamboo saplings were planted near the Multipurpose Hall, symbolising the state’s commitment to sustaining and conserving bamboo. This initiative aligns with the National Bamboo Mission’s objectives, which include increasing the area under bamboo plantation, improving post-harvest management, and promoting product development.
Meghalaya has been actively promoting bamboo cultivation, with the Meghalaya Bamboo Mission expanding cultivation across 383 hectares since 2018.
The state’s efforts aim to foster bamboo-based industries, generate employment, and promote environmental sustainability.
