Shillong, Nov 27: Sumit Deb, an Associate Professor of St. Edmund’s College has won the ‘Best Academician’ award of the year in the field of Chemistry by the Scientific Laurels, which recognises researchers globally.
The highly prestigious award was bestowed on Deb for his impactful research in environmental bioremediation, student mentorship and contributions toward innovation-driven education.
This is for the first time that a researcher from Meghalaya has won the prestigious award.
With 32 years of teaching experience and 17 years of active research, his work reflects a deep commitment to both scientific research and nurturing the next generation of scientists.
Deb research focus lies in the Bioremediation of toxic pollutants, particularly those emanating from fossil fuel processing and textile industries. Over the last two decades, he has made significant contributions to environmental biotechnology by working on Bioremediation of industrial toxins using cyanobacteria, development of a novel bioreactor technology, which is currently undergoing patenting process and research to reduce industrial waste impact on ecology and human health.
With four publications, Deb’s bibliometric indicators highlight strong scientific impact and citation presence in reputed databases including Scopus, Web of Science and PubMed.
Earlier, Deb was awarded the prestigious “Faculty of the Year” title at LEAP 2025, organised by the London School of Digital Business, UK.
Competing alongside nominees from over 70 countries and 400 institutions, this recognition reflects his exceptional academic leadership, and dedication to advancing higher education.
