Worried about the future of the children they have been teaching, SSA school teachers in Garo Hills have called off their week-long strike and chose to go on an indefinite hunger strike in from the Chief Minister’s residence in Tura.
The teachers under the banner of the All Garo Hills SSA School Teachers’ Association (AGHSSASTA) have been demanding release of their eight months pending dues.
The decision comes in the wake of the there being no positive response from the government on the matter of their 2017 dues. They have been on strike from March 1 to 5 in the entire Garo Hills.
“We being teachers are much more concerned for our students and so we decided to discontinue boycott of regular classes from Monday onwards. We have been compelled to take up stronger democratic agitations due to the reluctance of competent authorities to meet our demand,” said the teachers in a press release.
The teachers stated that it had been four years since the pending arrears remain unpaid.
