The Shillong Sports Association (SSA) has written to the East Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner to protest against the construction of commercial structures by the Shillong Recreation Ground Trust (SRGT) near the SSA Stadium at First Ground, Polo, here.
The construction is near the side of the SSA Stadium that is closest to the main road. Recently, the SRGT has given a facelift to the space near the river, creating a family-friendly park.
The commercial structures it is setting up would be near to this and would be near to the stadium where the SSA has also created space for several shops when the stadium was renovated a few years ago.
The SRGT is the trustee of the land in question but its lease has apparently not been renewed by the government, leading the SSA to approach the government directly.
Meanwhile, yesterday the SSA also informed that it will approach the government for permission to utilise Second Ground and transform it into an artificial turf.
The ground is currently a mud-and-sand surface that is utilised for football, fairs and the government’s Republic Day and Independence Day celebrations.
