The North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU) has reacted strongly to the use of certain nomenclatures for the present Vice-Chancellor by the NEHU Teachers’ Association (NEHUTA), the Meghalaya Tribal Teachers’ Association (MeTTA) and the Meghalaya Confederation for Academic Welfare (MeCAW) in the media.
In a statement issued today, the NEHU said that these organisations have time and time again referred to the Vice-Chancellor Prof. S K Srivastava as a “Caretaker”, “Term-ended”, “Term-expired”, “Acting” Vice Chancellor in the media.
“This is nothing but an attempt to mislead the public and smack of malafide intent. The university condemns these actions and urges the organisations to desist from indulging in such deplorable acts,” NEHU said.
The statement also said that the Vice-Chancellor of NEHU holds office and complies with the directions of the Government of India, and functions according to the NEHU Acts and Statutes.
“As per the communication received from the Ministry of Education, Government of India, dated 22nd September, 2020, Prof. Srivastava will continue to hold office for such period not exceeding a total period of one year or till his successor is appointed, whichever is earlier. Prof. Srivastava will continue to hold the office of the Vice- Chancellor and exercise the powers and the duties of the Vice-Chancellor strictly in accordance with the NEHU Act and Statutes,” NEHU said.
NEHU also said that Prof. Srivastava assumed the office of Vice-Chancellor, NEHU on September 24, 2015 for a period of five years which was completed on September 23, 2020 and is continuing in the post after expiry of his full five-year term as per the direction of Government of India.
“Thus, the general public is requested not to be misled by such organisations,” NEHU said.
