The election of two-time NPP legislator Thomas A. Sangma as the new Speaker of the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly is a foregone conclusion since he was the only candidate in the race.
A special session of the Assembly will be held tomorrow to elect the new Speaker.
The MLA from North Tura is the candidate of the 45-member MDA-2 alliance for the post of Speaker.
Sangma was the only contender to file the nominations for the election and as such he will be elected unopposed for the post of Speaker.
The MDA-2 government has the support of NPP (26), UDP (11) BJP (2), HSPDP (2), PDF (2) and Independents (2).
The opposition bench on the other hand has the strength of 14 members which include Congress (5), All India Trinamool Congress (5), and Voice of the People Party (4).
If elected, Sangma will succeed UDP chief and Mairang MLA Metbah Lyngdoh who held the post of Speaker from 2018 to February 2023.
