Speaker of the Assembly, Metbah Lyngdoh, urged the State government to do more to bridge the gap between urban and rural areas in terms of the education scenario, saying that, too often, rural areas come second to those in urban settings when new projects are implemented.
Lyngdoh said this today while inaugurating a new building of Aradonga Higher Secondary (Deficit) School, which was constructed under a project funded by the Asian Development Bank (ADB). The building was constructed at a cost of Rs 3.65 crore.
In his speech, the Speaker said that the government must prioritise development activities in rural areas, which are often lagging behind their urban counterparts.
“I feel upset when I see this kind of attitude, but we have our leaders in the past who have made sincere efforts to see that the gap between the urban and the rural areas is bridged so as to enable the children of rural areas to enjoy the same kind of environment that those in the urban areas are getting,” he said.
Lyngdoh also expressed his happiness to learn that the school, which was established in 1962, will turn 60 in 2022, which coincides with the 50th year of statehood for Meghalaya.
“The school is standing as it is till today and it is growing from year to year because of the dedication and commitment rendered by the teachers. Without their commitment and dedication, I don’t think it would have been possible for the school to stand as it is (now),” the Speaker said.
The school authorities also submitted a memorandum urging Lyngdoh to prevail upon the government to bring it under the state education umbrella. The Speaker assured them that he will take up the matter with Education Minister Lahkmen Rymbui.
