Shillong, Nov 10: Assembly Speaker Thomas A Sangma has highlighted the crucial role of the legislature in shaping national policy, stating that it is not merely a law-making body, but an architect of national policy.
Speaking at the 22nd Annual Conference of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA), India Region Zone-III, Sangma emphasised that legislatures play a vital role in ensuring accountable, transparent, and people-centric governance. He stressed that sound laws can transform aspirations into action and vision into reality.
The conference, hosted by the Nagaland Legislative Assembly, focuses on strengthening democratic institutions, inter-legislative cooperation
Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla inaugurated the conference, highlighting the North Eastern region’s rich cultural heritage and democratic values.
Chief Minister of Nagaland Neiphiu Rio urged legislatures to reaffirm their commitment to parliamentary democracy and cooperative federalism.
Deputy Chairman of the Rajya Sabha Harivansh emphasised the Union Government’s respect for India’s cultural diversity and its commitment to inclusive economic growth.
Deputy Speaker Limison D. Sangma is also attending the conference, to conclude on November 13 with sessions dedicated to fostering greater collaboration and strengthening parliamentary democracy across the North Eastern region.
