Aibok Madur, a young soldier from Mawbri village in Ri-Bhoi, laid down his life for India while serving at the Siachen Glacier in Ladakh.
Aibok was part of the GOC, Fire and Fury Corps of the Indian Army’s Assam Regiment, and made the ultimate sacrifice in a confrontation with enemy forces on November 7. Senior Army officials expressed their condolences for the brave soldier and offered sympathies to his family.
Aibok’s body was honoured on Saturday in Mawbri which is his home town with full military honours, including a final gun salute, as per the solemn traditions of the armed forces. His burial rites will be conducted on Monday at Lyngkhoi village, where his wife resides.
“We salute the unparalleled bravery of Sepoy Aibok Madur from Assam Regiment, who made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty on November 7, 2024, in Siachen,” Sangma wrote on social media in the morning. Later, in a separate post, he announced that the state government will provide an ex-gratia of Rs 20 lakh to the next of kin of the braveheart.
Meanwhile, the Mahila Pradesh Congress Committee of Meghalaya has expressed its deepest condolences and remorse over the untimely demise of Madur.
“The Congress party extends its heartfelt condolences, prayers to his family and dear and loved ones. Aibok Madur was a dedicated, brave and disciplined soldier in his unit; his untimely demise will not go unforgettable and his name shall ever be remembered in the echelons of history. The death of Aibok Madur will surely give rise to more patriots like him in the years to come, the Congress stands with the bereaved family in this time of grief,” the Meghalaya Mahila Congress said in a statement today.
