Sohra police have arrested a person and three others accused of stealing bikes and recovered 16 stolen two-wheelers.
According to East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police, the arrest was made possible when Sohra police were investigating a case about a stolen pulsar bike from Laitsohpliah on September 9.
Acting on a tip off that the bike was spotted near Mairang in Eastern West Khasi Hills district, a team from Sohra went to Mairang and with a team of police there, they intercepted the bike and arrested two persons.
The SP said that the two accused revealed that most of the two-wheelers were stolen from Shillong by one mastermind from Nongsohma under Eastern West Khasi Hills district.
The accused said to be the mastermind was then arrested on September 18. The SP said he admitted to be involved in most of the two wheelers theft cases in and around Shillong along with the others.
“On his revelation, the police team recovered one scooty and two bikes the same night,” he said.
The next day, a team from Sohra PS led by the Officer-in-Charge Pynhunlang M. Syiem along with Phrianglin Syiem I/C Nongthymmai BH, SI Stephen Nongspung IO of the case and a Special Cell team from Shillong recovered another 11 stolen motorcycles from Nongsohma village.
“A garage where stolen bikes are modified and registration number plates are replaced with fake ones has also been discovered at Nongkrem locality under Nongsohma village,” the SP said.
A total number of 15 motorcycles and a scooty have been recovered and investigation is on to ascertain the involvement of others in several bike theft cases, he added.
