Shillong, Nov 15: Mobile phones and social media are destroying youth and children of today as well as causing tension in marriages, experts observed.
During a recent consultative meeting of stakeholders organised by the state’s Social Welfare department, Chairperson of the State Commission for Protection of Child Rights, Agatha Sangma suggested parents to reduce the screen time of their children.
“As parents we should monitor the screen time of our children,” Sangma said.
The Chairperson of the SCPCR also suggested that working mothers should manage a couple of hours’ or make use of holidays to spend time with their children.
Chairperson of the Meghalaya State Commission for Women (MSCW), Iamon Syiem said that social media is destroying families and many cases the commission receives are often attributed to such platforms.
According to Syiem, a simple text from unknown persons in social media platforms to married partners is causing tensions in the family.
She expressed concern that the commission receives petitions from single mothers seeking maintenance from their partners even as she stated that it was a sad affair since more women are coming for maintenance.
According to the women commission chairperson in many cases, the men say that they cannot pay for maintenance since they do not have a proper job.
