Nongpoh, Sep 10: Police from Umsning Police Station recovered skeletal remains from a forest area near the Meghalaya Police 6th Battalion campus at Umran Niangbyrnai, Ri-Bhoi, yesterday.
The remains, discovered by locals, were identified to be that of a man from Ummar village who had been missing since June 11. The man was reported missing after he had alighted from a vehicle while returning from Shillong to his native village in Western Ri-Bhoi.
According to reports, the remains were first discovered by woodcutters on Monday evening. Ri-Bhoi police were then informed and recovered the skeletal remains for further investigation. On Wednesday, the family arrived and formally identified the deceased as their relative, with confirmation based on his clothing, mobile phone, and most importantly, the SIM card registered in his name.
According to reports, Carlus Tron had just returned from Shillong, where his wife had given birth. He was travelling back from the state capital along with his mother-in-law and three friends in a vehicle. The party stopped on the road at Umran where Tron answered the call of nature. However, he never returned and the others proceeded to Ummar without him.
The task for police is now to identify the cause of death.
