The Congress, a sinking ship in the eyes of Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong, has finally sunk, with the party looking as if it will be reduced to zero MLAs in the Assembly.
He was speaking in relation to the support given by the five remaining Congress legislators to the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance government. That support has resulted in their suspension, with a possible expulsion on the cards.
For his part, Tynsong felt that their support is a positive sign and a vote of confidence in the work of the government.
Although plenty of rumours as to which parties the Congress five will join are flying about, Tynsong said that no formal application from them has been received by his National People’s Party.
As far as their standing in the Assembly is concerned, the Deputy CM said that the five – Ampareen Lyngdoh, Process Sawkmie, Mayralborn Syiem, Mohendro Rapsang and Kimfa Marbaniang – will be counted as part of the government benches even though they are still technically Congress MLAs despite being suspended. If they are subsequently expelled by the Congress, they will be independent legislators.
