After one month of noise and roars, tranquility has returned in the State as campaigning for the first phase of Lok Sabha election ended today evening.
Meghalaya which has two parliamentary seats – Shillong and Tura – will vote in the first phase of the election on April 19.
Although the election campaign has been by and large peaceful, it was however ugly as political parties resorted to name calling and vilifying each other in poll meetings.
Interestingly, this is the first time that the Lok Sabha election hit fever pitch. It was also the first time that a parliamentary election drew large attendance at election meetings organised by various political parties.
In Shillong parliamentary seat, election rallies called by the opposition VPP have drawn most crowds as compared to other political parties in the poll fray.
Today, which is the last day of campaigning, saw huge turnout at the VPP meeting at Madan Smit under Nongkrem constituency.
Another big gathering was the one organised by the ruling NPP at Malki Ground under Shillong East constituency.
The State has 22, 26,567 voters who included 10, 99,517 male, 11, 27,047 female and three third-gender voters.
The number of electors in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections was 19, 11,372.
