Police today arrested a man who is suspected of making derogatory remarks against East Khasi Hill Deputy Commissioner Isawanda Laloo in a recent Facebook post.
East Khasi Hills police took up a suo moto case after the remarks went viral on social media platforms.
Superintendent of Police Sylvester Nongtnger said the person, identified as 38-year-old Donlad Shylla, was arrested after the district police’s Cyber Cell was engaged to track him.
With the assistance of West Jaintia Hills police, Shylla was nabbed at Nongjngi village, West Jaintia Hills, Nongtnger said. He will be produced in court and further investigation is being made to ensure that the case reaches its logical conclusion, he added.
Shylla’s comments were condemned across society, with strong words by Chief Minister Conrad Sangma. In a social media post of his own, the CM said, “Condemn the distasteful comments made on the Deputy Commissioner of East Khasi Hills who has been executing her duties to the best of her ability to ensure the safety of all residents. Supporting the administration that is tirelessly working through this pandemic is the least we can do as responsible citizens. Let us fight against this common enemy and support all those in the frontline.”
