Shillong, Nov 19: The Greater Shillong Water Supply Scheme (GSWSS) Phase 3 has finally been commissioned and tested, marking the end of a project that began in 2008, Public Health Engineering (PHE) Minister Marcuise N Marak said today.
Marak said the long-pending scheme has now reached the operational stage. “The project was sanctioned in 2008 and today, in November 2025, we are commissioning and testing it,” he stated.
With the commissioning of Phase 3, an additional 8 million litres per day (MLD) will now be added to the existing water supply system for Shillong, improving the reliability of water supply for residents across Shillong.
According to the minister, the first stage of the pumping system had already been successfully completed. Wednesday’s event marked the start of the second state, which will pump water to the Mawphlang treatment plant.
While thanking the Chief Minister, as almost every minister always does for one project or another, Marak also acknowledged the role of former Chief Secretary Donald P Wahlang, noting that his intervention helped resolve land-related hurdles that had delayed the project.
He further recognised the contributions of former PHE chief engineers and other stakeholders who played key roles over the years.
