The Green- Tech Foundation (GTF), Meghalaya, an organisation working towards environmental protection, is perturbed by the meadows of Shillong Peak in Laitkor being ruined by rubbish thrown by tourists and passersby.
Shillong Peak, which is one of the state’s favourite tourist destinations, is being littered with plastic water bottles, bottles of alcohol and other trash.
The organisation led by Chairman H. Bansiewdor Nonglang visited the area yesterday and expressed concern and said the place has turned into a mini mart where people can drink liquor, other intoxication without any restrictions until midnight.
“If the Syiem of Hima Mylliem does not take any action the Shillong viewpoint, Laitkor peak, will become a hub of illegal activities,” Nonglang said.
He said the place has no proper signboards indicating any restrictions, and vehicles can enter and exit the area without any time limit. Furthermore, there is no proper wall or fencing around the area, and there are no checkpoints or entry/exit points to inspect those who visit, he added.
Nonglang stated that individuals who visit this place very freely without any restrictions are contributing to the negative image of Shillong Peak as a dirty place.
