Shillong, Oct 3: The 9th India International Folk Festival, organised by the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) Zonal Office, North East, in collaboration with the State Department of Arts & Culture was held today at the Lariti Multipurpose Hall in Mawkasiang.
The event served as a cultural bridge between Meghalaya, Armenia, and Poland, highlighting the power of art in promoting mutual appreciation and understanding. Audiences in Shillong experienced a rare opportunity to witness global traditions performed live, blending seamlessly with the region’s own cultural vibrancy.
The festival, celebrated simultaneously in New Delhi and other parts of India, featured enthralling performances by international cultural troupes – Hay Astger (Armenian Stars) and Nane Folk Dance Ensemble from Armenia, along with Ziemia Bydgoska from Poland. Their performances of traditional music and dance captivated the audience, offering a glimpse into the vibrant cultural heritage of their homelands.
As part of ICCR’s 75th year of celebrations, it was also announced that three cultural troupes from Meghalaya will soon be sponsored to perform abroad. Adding to the excitement, the renowned Shillong Chamber Choir will represent Meghalaya and India on an international stage in London this December.
The ICCR reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening India’s cultural ties with the world while ensuring that the unique artistic traditions of the Northeast are showcased globally.
