Shillong, Sep 26: The Shillong-Dawki road near Pomlum is set to reopen after successful clearance work on the affected stretch following a landslide.
Landslides due to the construction of the Laitlyngkot-Pynursla road, part of the Shillong-Dawki project, have become a common occurrence. On the afternoon of September 24 a landslide halted the flow of traffic. Officials involved in the construction of the road said that there was a dynamiting of the hill near Pomlum to widen that stretch since the use of earth movers was not feasible. Officials also informed that as many as four workers received minor injuries in the incident.
The concerned company was scheduled to conduct final safety works on Friday night before the road fully opens. Vehicular movement will be permitted from Saturday morning from 8am onwards for the entire day.
Then, from Sunday to Tuesday daily road restrictions will be enforced from 11:30am to 4pm and from 9pm to 4am. Commuters have been told to exercise caution while traveling through the stretch, as the area may remain sensitive despite completion of clearance works.
The Additional Deputy Commissioner of Pynursla civil sub-division also informed the general public and all concerned that movement of goods/boulder laden trucks shall remain restricted from Lad-Umsyiem to Dawki Bridge until complete restoration at the site is carried out and the road is declared safe for use of such vehicles. All transporters and commuters are to take note of this restriction and to kindly extend their cooperation.
