A national webinar on “Recent Developments in Nanomaterials Chemistry and Natural Products Chemistry” was today organised to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of Statehood of Meghalaya by the department of Chemistry Shillong College.
The resource persons for the webinar were Dr Jasha Momo H. Añal, Scientist CSIR-Indian Institute of Integrative Medicine, Jammu and Dr. Subhojit Das, Assistant Professor, NIT Agartala.
Das elaborated on the buzzword “nano” and the study of nano science which deals with the study, manipulation and engineering of matter, particles and structures on the nanometer scale. The application of nanotechnology leads to the use of new nanomaterials and nanoscience components in useful products.
Anal talked about natural products as being sources of new drug molecules or leads. He mentioned that the Northeast is a rich biodiversity hotspot known to be a bio-resource for many medicinal plants that have been known to possess many pharmacological properties.
The webinar was attended by students, research scholars and teachers from the state as well as outside the state. There were also a few participants from the University of Utah, USA.
