Shillong, Mar 3:Batskhem Myrboh, the Voice of the People Party (VPP), has assured voters that he will be led by the example of the late Shillong MP Ricky AJ Syngkon if he is chosen by the voters in the forthcoming by-election.
Syngkon won the 2024 general election for the Shillong seat by a huge margin in the VPP’s first win at the Lok Sabha level. However, he passed away from a sudden heart attack on February 19. Myrboh, the VPP’s chief spokesperson up to this point, was yesterday recommended to contest the by-election by the party’s election committee.
Speaking today, Myrboh said that carrying the legacy of Syngkon forwards will be a heavy burden but he will take forward what the VPP and Syngkon promised in 2024.
Myrboh, who, like Syngkon, comes from academia, said that he and the party hope that they will win the poll with the support of the public.
Myrboh is an assistant professor in political science at NEHU. He said that the issue of the inclusion of Khasi and Garo languages in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution and implementation of the Inner Line Permit (ILP) have been long pending and complicated.
“We will follow them up as promised in our manifesto in 2024. I and my party promise to take up these issues,” he said.
