The United Democratic Party women’s wing president was left in a bit of a quandary after she was asked today about her stand on sex workers’ rights.
The women’s wing held a core committee meeting here today and then addressed the media. Its president, Pretty Kharpyngrope, then faced a googly from the press on the women’s wing’s stand on prostitution.
During the briefing, she was asked why pertinent issues like the issue of sex workers are not discussed.
Kharpyngrope stated that in their individual capacity there are many issues that the women’s wing is involved in but, at the political party level, to speak openly about it is “not viable”.
Earlier this year, the Assembly witnessed a debate on Khyndailad being a pick-up point for sex workers. Home Minister Lahkmen Rymbui, of the UDP, pleaded ignorance about the matter, saying he was unaware of such goings-on.
