Shillong, Sep 8: The Meghalaya Legislative Assembly on Monday passed several important amendment Bills on the opening day of the autumn session.
Among the Bills cleared were the Meghalaya State Language (Amendment) Bill, 2025, the Meghalaya Private Medical Institution (Regulation of Admission, Fixation of Fees and Reservation) Bill, 2025, and the Meghalaya Private Universities (Amendment) Bill, 2025.
Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma introduced the State Language (Amendment) Bill. He explained that after the creation of the Eastern West Khasi Hills district, it was necessary to include the district under the Meghalaya State Language Act, 2005, since Khasi is widely spoken there.
Earlier, as the Assembly was not in session, the Governor had issued an Ordinance. The Bill now seeks to replace that Ordinance with a law.
Health Minister Ampareen Lyngdoh tabled two Bills — the Meghalaya Private Medical Institution (Regulation of Admission, Fixation of Fees and Reservation) Bill, 2025, and the Meghalaya Homeopathic Medicine (Amendment) Bill, 2025.
Education Minister Rakkam A Sangma moved the Meghalaya Private Universities (Amendment) Bill, 2025.
Meghalaya Deputy Chief Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar introduced the Meghalaya Heritage (Amendment) Bill, 2025.
