In a significant step toward empowering children and youth with disabilities, Seva-in-Action marked a major milestone by organizing a unique knowledge-based programme here today.
The event, primarily a quizzing platform for children and youth with disabilities, aims to provide a space for knowledge development—a domain often overlooked in existing disability-focused programs. It aims to showcase the intellectual abilities of children with disabilities with a shared commitment to breaking societal barriers.
Speaking at the occasion, Ruma Banerjee, Vice Chairperson of Seva-in-Action, expressed her gratitude and pride in bringing the initiative to the northeastern region.
“A very big milestone, I should say, for Seva-in-Action —it has been my dream to organize this event in Meghalaya and Shillong. The need in the northeastern states is immense, and our goal is to reach out and provide opportunities for these children,” said Banerjee.
“While platforms like the Special Olympics and Paralympics highlight physical capabilities, there has been a lack of initiatives to nurture intellectual growth. Our purpose is to create opportunities for these children to showcase their abilities and challenge societal mindsets. Too often, as parents and educators, we set low expectations for these children. This event is about changing that perception and empowering them to speak for themselves,” Banerjee emphasised.
Reflecting on the organisation’s decade-long journey, Banerjee recounted the early challenges when many believed the invitations to participate in the quiz were sent by mistake. However, the success of the program has gradually shifted perceptions and fostered greater confidence among the participants.
“This platform is not just about answering questions—it is about building confidence, changing mindsets, and proving that these children are capable. Our vision is to empower them to advocate for themselves and show that they, too, have remarkable abilities,” Banerjee concluded.
