Shillong, Mar 16: The East Jaintia Hills District Magistrate has prohibited the sale and distribution of petrol and diesel in loose quantities.
The sale of petrol and diesel in jerry cans, bottles, and other containers without proper authorization is strictly prohibited, an order under Section 163 BNSS said.
The order said the sale and storage of petroleum products pose serious risks to public safety, including fire hazards, threat to life and property, and may lead to disruption of public order.
However, the issuance of diesel for mobile towers and road construction companies will continue as per the standing orders issued, subject to compliance with the relevant provisions of the Petroleum Act, 1934 and applicable regulations.
Violators are liable for legal action under Section 223 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and other relevant provisions of the law, the order said.
