The East Khasi Hills District Magistrate has promulgated an order under Section 144 of the CrPC to crack down against noise pollution in the district by prohibiting high density air horns, sale of public audio systems without sound limiters, honking of horns in silence zones or in residential areas at night.
This was done after it was found that many vehicle owners are using banned air horns and modified silencers in their vehicles, thereby violating National Green Tribunal orders and noise pollution rules.
Silence zones include areas 100 metres around hospitals, educational institutions, courts and religious places. Honking in residential areas is banned between 10pm and 6am, except during public emergencies or by garbage collection vehicles.
