The office of the Sub-Divisional Officer in Patharkhmah in Ri Bhoi district remained closed for weeks due to absence of the officer and staff.
This was revealed by the Ri Bhoi People’s Council (RBPC) during a visit to the office yesterday after people complained against the negligent attitude of the officials by not attending work.
The RBPC led by president Jayson Lennox Nongrum said residents have reported delays and disruptions in accessing services due to closure and the absence of staff, which has led to work piling up.
He said residents have to travel to Nongpoh for services that should be available locally.
The group has demanded the government to act and said that if it fails to appoint a fulltime SDO, it will take further action to address its closure.
“We want to ensure that the office functions effectively and serves the community as intended, rather than allowing it to remain inactive and require residents to seek services elsewhere,” he said.
