Shillong, Apr 4: The Meghalaya Schools Welfare Development Association has expressed disappointment over the lack of progress regarding critical issues affecting secondary and higher secondary schools across the state.
According to the Directorate of Schools Education and Literacy (DSEL), there are 29 government, 17 deficit, and 69 adhoc higher secondary schools, along with 121 deficit secondary schools.
However, the association alleged that the state government has ignored petitions for grant-in-aid to eligible schools. This has adversely affected 219 secondary schools, which currently receive only science grants, thereby limiting their resources and educational quality, the association added.
The association has urged the government to take swift action by providing grant-in-aid to deserving schools. It pointed out that many of the permitted educational institutions are struggling due to unfavourable economic conditions, which is adversely influencing the quality of education provided.
To address these issues, the association will convene a general meeting on April 6, 2026. The meeting will also discuss the challenges faced by 1544 SSA schools (835 lower primary and 709 upper primary), such as teacher vacancies and proper categorization.
