The Education Department is working on the proposed school bus project in Shillong but is facing challenges in its implementation, Education Minister Lahkmen Rymbui said today.
The project was announced by the Chief Minister during the budget session of the Assembly last month. One of its aims is to reduce traffic congestion in the state capital, much of which is blamed on ferrying children to and from school in private cars.
The plan is for 100 buses to be rolled out in the city.
“I don’t have details on how many schools [will be covered] but the project is on. Whatever initiative is taken is for the best interests of the student community,” the minister said.
Apart from the 100 buses, or mini-buses as the CM said in the Assembly, the government is also planning on introducing a fleet of electric buses for public transportation. The government has budgeted Rs 20 crore for such public transport in 2022-23.
