Meghalaya is already utilising space technology for environmental matters and there is scope on expanding its use, Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma said today, into other areas for social and economic benefit.
Sangma was speaking during the inaugural session of the precursor event of the 4th Space Economy Leaders Meeting (SELM) under G20 Presidency of India.
The CM said that the state government, in collaboration with NESAC (which is based in Ri-Bhoi), has been able to use space technology to identify and prepare policies to take stock of floods in an effective manner.
According to him, space technology has already helped in the issue of flood control and has also been used successfully by the government to identify forested areas of Meghalaya and provided insights into how to deal with the problem of climate change. Other areas in which it has been used include protection of catchment areas and biodiversity.
On SELM, Sangma said that it is being held at the same time as India is making numerous triumphs in moving forwards in space technology and during a time of massive investment in space programmes by G20 nations.
