South Shillong MLA Sanbor Shullai, one of only two Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) legislators in the Meghalaya Assembly, said today that he was not aware nor consulted before the state party approached the Lokayukta over allegations of corruption in the Garo Hills and Jaiñtia Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC and JHADC).
Shullai also said that other senior leaders were not made aware of the complaint.
The Meghalaya BJP has been sparring with its allies in the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) government over alleged corruption in the two district councils, which are run by their allies at the state-level.
Shullai said that nobody in the government supports corruption but any differences among the parties in the alliance should be discussed in an appropriate forum. The BJP should have waited for the issues to be discussed in the MDA coordination committee before taking any action, he added.
State party leaders will meet with central leaders, the BJP in-charge of Meghalaya and the North East Democratic Alliance chief Himanta Biswa Sarma (also a senior minister in the BJP government in Assam) after Christmas to seek clarity on the issue.
