Shillong, Jan 20: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA and cabinet minister Sanbor Shullai along with state president and other senior leaders of the party met Union Tourism and Culture Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat in New Delhi today.
During the meeting, Shullai, who is Arts and Culture Minister in Meghalaya, made a request to the minister to initiate various cultural schemes in Meghalaya so as to safeguard the traditional practices of the Khasi and Garo people, specifically of those who practise indigenous faiths.
Shullai stressed that a cultural heritage traditional market that will showcase the richness of North East needs to be set up in Mawlai on the land that the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) camp is going to be relocated from and he requested Shekhawat to visit the area to better understand the proposed project and how it fits with the Arts and Culture Department’s goal to support cultural tourism.
Shullai also put in a particular request for his own constituency of South Shillong, requesting the Tourism Minister to initiate a tourism development scheme there to create direct and indirect employment.
