Shillong, Jan 13: The Meghalaya Power Generation Corporation Limited (MePGDCL) organised an awareness programme to educate residents living near the Umtru Hydro Electric Power Station in Byrnihat about personal safety measures and the importance of protecting the power station.
The programme was held yesterday under the Dam Rehabilitation and Improvement Project (DRIP) and attended by Power Minister Metbah Lyngdoh and Community and Rural Development Minister Sosthenes Sohtun, along with senior officials and local residents.
During the programme, special awareness sessions were conducted for tourists and local residents who frequently visit the Umtru river, advising them to exercise caution, particularly during the release of water and especially in the monsoon season, to prevent any untoward incidents. Participants were also sensitised on the importance of maintaining cleanliness of the river and protecting the hydroelectric power station, urging them not to damage the natural and infrastructural assets in the area.
A plantation drive and rally with school students were also held. Dignitaries also inspected the dam.
