Shillong, Feb 10: Safer Internet Day, 2026 was observed today in Ampati, with the objective of creating awareness about safe, secure, and responsible use of the internet and emerging digital technologies, especially Artificial Intelligence (AI).
District officers, teachers, students and stakeholders took part in the programme under the theme, “Smart Tech, Safe Choices: Exploring the Safe and Responsible Use of AI”, highlighting the growing importance of digital safety in an increasingly connected world.
The event was chaired by Raymond Z D. Shira, Additional Deputy Commissioner and Project Director, DRDA & SRES, who emphasized the need for responsible online behaviour, cyber awareness, and the role of government institutions in promoting digital literacy and cybersecurity among citizens.
Deputy Commissioner Anendya Raajsshree underscored the significance of Safer Internet Day in educating users, especially students and young professionals about online risks, ethical use of technology, and the importance of safeguarding personal data in the digital age.
A detailed presentation was delivered by Elliber A. Marak, DIO, NIC District Unit. The presentation covered key aspects of internet safety, cyber threats, best practices for online protection, and the responsible use of Artificial Intelligence in daily life and governance.
The programme concluded with a collective call for greater awareness, informed digital choices, and collaborative efforts to build a safer and more inclusive digital environment.
