Taking the power portfolio away from James Sangma would undermine the independent inquiry into the Meghalaya Energy Corporation Ltd (MeECL), Chief Minister Conrad Sangma said today.
The opposition Congress Party has been demanding James’ sacking for the same basic reason – that his continuing in the post would weaken the inquiry.
“The independent inquiry committee is being headed by a retired judge and this kind of demand is completely undermining the committee that has been put up. Therefore, this committee should be allowed to function and to submit its report,” Conrad said.
As the committee is independent and because the MeECL is an autonomous body, there is no interference in the day-to-day running of the utility, the CM stated.
The inquiry committee has been given three months to complete its probe and its first sitting will be held next week.
The three-member commission will be headed by retired Allahabad High Court judge Ifaqat Ali Khan, with retired IAS officer Manoj Kumar as administrative member and retired executive director of the Rural Electrification Corporation Sunil Kumar as technical member.
