North Shillong MLA Adelbert Nongrum challenged Home Minister Lahkmen Rymbui to come out of his bubble and open his eyes to the problem of Khyndailad, the commercial centre of the state, being used as a pickup point for sex workers.
Earlier Rymbui said that the government is not aware that Khyndailad has become a hub of the sex trade. The minister innocently said that Khyndailad is known for being a pickup point for passengers who board taxis and buses.
“Till date it (prostitution) has not come to my notice,” Rymbui stated, adding that the government has set up anti-human trafficking units in all districts.
“If you really mean business, spare your precious time after 10 pm. We will roam and we will see how true it is,” Nongrum said in response.
He added that the issue should not be taken lightly as many precious lives are involved.
“It is a shame and I am afraid that if we cannot control it, Khyndailad might turn into a red light area,” the KHNAM representative said during Question Hour.
Meanwhile, East Shillong MLA Ampareen Lyngdoh said that the police should investigate the issue and submit a reply to the house.
“We understand that you can laugh when it is a matter of concern for weaknesses and compulsions that women have. But it would be in the fitness of things to take stock of the situation and give us an assurance that some kind of work will get done and we can see if there is any truth,” Lyngdoh said.
