Shillong, Feb 6:The state’s first mechanised multi-level car park was inaugurated today on Vivekananda Road near the Additional Secretariat.
The project cost a phenomenal Rs 6.5 crore and will accommodate a maximum of 58 cars at any one time across its eight levels. The idea is to ease traffic congestion in the city.
The facility is equipped with an automated retrieval system, which a government press release today said would ensure efficient land use and faster parking operations.
As part of this long‑term decongestion strategy, 10 additional facilities like this will be constructed across Shillong. Together, these will add 1,371 Equivalent Car Spaces (ECS) to the city’s parking capacity.
The Urban Affairs Department’s new on‑street parking regulation is currently operational in 30 locations across Shillong, enabling organised parking for more than 44,000 vehicles, creating employment opportunities for local youth and generating Rs 16 lakh in revenue for urban local bodies and communities, the release added. This initiative is slated for expansion to 30 additional locations, which will together add over 950 car parking spaces on city streets.
To further promote public participation in decongestion efforts, the Urban Affairs Department has launched the grant‑in‑aid scheme for off‑street parking. The scheme provides financial assistance to landowners within the Greater Shillong Planning Area (GSPA) to build and operate parking facilities. Support under the scheme includes Rs 1 lakh per ECS for surface-level and stacked parking and Rs 5 lakh per ECS for automated parking systems.
