The state government will impose a fine of Rs 500 per day on individuals who release the contents of septic tanks directly into local rivers, Chief Secretary Donald P Wahlang informed today.
Speaking to reporters after a meeting with concerned stakeholders on the rejuvenation and restoration of Shillong’s heavily polluted rivers, he said, “It is time to wake up as the situation is alarming and only collective efforts will see us through.”
The state government has identified 32 locations in Shillong – 20 along the Wahumkhrah and 12 along the Umshyrpi – where there is a need to set up mini sewage treatment plants.
Five have already been set up and others are under construction. The government is looking for land from the Dorbar Shnongs to set up such treatment plants.
Stressing on the important role that the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) will play, Wahlang said that the council has empowered headmen outside Municipal areas to levy fines on citizens who release waste directly into rivers.
Meanwhile, as far as the Umkhen river’s problems go, the Chief Secretary said that mining activity and quarrying is a big issue and the state has been given 45 days by the National Green Tribunal to take corrective measures.
