Rotary Club of Orchid City Shillong in collaboration with Department of Geology, North Eastern Hill University, with support from the office of the Deputy Commissioner today organised a river cleaning drive at Umshyrpi River to celebrate Gandhi Jayanti.
East Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner, Isawanda Laloo joined the drive as chief guest and flagged-off the Save Rivers Movement, while actively participating in the cleaning drive.
Laloo spoke on the dangers of direct dumping of garbage into the streams and urged people to join hands in saving the precious water bodies in the city and the State.
Rtn Devesh Walia, Chair-Water & Sanitation (RCOCS) and Head, Dept. of Geology, NEHU said that it is duty bound for every citizen to keep rivers clean as communities could benefit both socially and economically.
Rtn Vivek Kumar, Co-chair, Water & Sanitation, RCOCS said streams and rivers are not merely flowing water bodies but life sustainers that is facing serious insult as a result of various anthropogenic activities like careless dumping of garbage/trash that poses several harmful implications for both humans and environment.
The event concluded with a take-away message to, “Keep the Rivers Clean & Earth Evergreen”.
