Congress leader Ronnie V Lyngdoh today spoke in favour of the delimitation process carried out by the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) to reorganise constituency boundaries.
He said the process came after more than 30 years and lauded the NPP-led executive committee under Pyniaid Sing Syiem as the CEM for the initiation.
Lyngdoh said the delimitation process is not just a matter of some constituencies having 50, 000 voters and some less than 13, 000 and the question of only the schemes, but to avoid any conflict.
“Suppose if a village in the MLA constituency falls in another constituency and the MDC in another, and if there are issues which has to do with traditional laws, don’t you think it will come to conflict? So if they can come up with 29 MLA constituencies and 29 MDC constituencies, except a few in Shillong city then the conflict can be avoided,” he said.
Asked if the delimitation process was to delay the elections, Lyngdoh blamed the previous UDP-led executive committee and said that they have not done anything on the matter for more than three years.
“I should appreciate the new EC under CEM Pyniaid Sing Syiem where in a matter of few months he thought it wise to have a delimitation committee because you have to do it someday. So why not do it now,” he maintained.
He said the delimitation committee is an autonomous body and once completed, it is up to the state government to hold the elections because even the court had said it cannot interfere in this election process.
