Cabinet minister and Mawkyrwat MLA, Renikton Lyngdoh Tongkhar, has proposed the creation of a rock garden in Jashiar village, South West Khasi Hills, as part of development projects in the area.
During yesterday’s visit of Chief Minister Conrad Sangma, the legislator urged him to provide funds to develop the area.
According to Tongkhar, the funds will be used to construct footbridges for the convenience of people to move about these rocks and also build railings to prevent accidents.
“I have asked the Chief Minister to allocate Rs 50 lakhs, but I do not know the exact estimate. We have asked technical persons to survey the area and estimate how much funding will be needed,” he said. “We thought that it will change the area if we have the rock garden preserved and develop it properly.”
Meanwhile, he also informed that the footbridge over the Rilang River that Sangma inaugurated in Jashiar was constructed jointly by the three village employment councils of Jashiar, Nongbah-Marshillong and Marshillong at a cost of Rs 35 lakh.
The footbridge was constructed in a record time of three months under the rural employment guarantee scheme (MGNREGS).
The distance to Mawkyrwat market has thus been reduced significantly from 8km to 3km.
