Jowai, Aug 26: Jowai MLA Wailadmiki Shylla on Tuesday chaired a district road safety committee meeting at Highwinds Lake Side and urged relevant departments to implement safety measures.
The meeting came after a recent tragic incident at Mukhla where two persons, including a two-year old toddler, were killed.
Officials from the District Transport Office (DTO), Traffic Police, Health Department, Public Works Department (PWD), and village leaders from Mukhla attended the meeting.
Shylla who also inspected the accident-prone areas at Mukhla and Mookyndur highlighted the dangerous conditions that have led to repeated incidents. He noted that fear has grown among commuters, particularly schoolchildren, who are now avoiding these stretches.
He also suggested construction of footpaths, installation of speed breakers and traffic warning signboards and holding of regular traffic awareness programmes.
At Mookyndur, known for its hazardous sharp bend, he stressed the need for immediate action by the PWD to prevent further accidents.
Shylla also informed the public about a government scheme providing Rs 2 lakh for fatalities and Rs 50,000 for injuries resulting from road accidents.
