A road safety awareness programme was held under the initiative of the District Transport Office (DTO) in collaboration with the offices of the Deputy Commissioner, the Superintendent of Police, the District Medical & Health Officer (DM&HO), the Public Work Department (PWD), South West Khasi Hills District in Mawkyrwat today.
The programme is part of the 34th National Road Safety Week/Month on the theme, “Road Safety – Safety to Life” with an aim to sensitise drivers and pedestrians on rules and regulations pertaining to road safety in order to safeguard precious and innocent lives.
At the programme, drivers were reminded of their roles and responsibilities by laying great stresses on the needs of following certain rules and procedures in order to avoid accidents of any kind. They were informed to follow strict rules and regulations by refraining from using mobile phones, toxic and intoxicated drinks while driving and to strictly adhere and obey traffic and other rules to avoid from untoward accidents.
Those who spoke at the programme were R. Rymbai, In-charge Mawkyrwat Police Traffic, Dr. A. Kharlyngdoh of the office of District Medical & Health Officer (DM&HO), and C. Wanniang, Assistant Executive Engineer of the office Public Work Department (PWD) Roads, Mawsaw Division.
DTO, W. Makdoh and staff of the office were also present at the programme.
