The Meghalaya Human Rights Commission (MHRC) has asked Chief Secretary Donald P Wahlang to submit a detailed report about the recent ‘eviction drive’ against alleged illegal settlers at Lum Survey.
In a statement today, the MHRC Secretary said the commission took action after hearing residents cry for help following the demolition at Lum Survey.
The Chief Secretary must submit the report by May 30.
On May 23, a case was registered against leaders of the Hynñiewtrep Youth Council (HYC) after they carried out their own eviction of settlers at Lum Survey area, opposite the Ïewduh Fire and Emergency Station.
Recently, Deputy Commissioner SC Sadhu said that nobody is allowed to take law into their own hands.
The Deputy Commissioner said that rather than solving the problem the eviction drive of the HYC will complicate the matter.
He had pointed out that the land belongs to the defence estate office of Guwahati and any action will be initiated from their end.
