Shillong, Mar 29: Independent MDC for Laban-Mawprem Ricky Shullai has expressed hope that a meeting called by Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) Chief Executive Member Winston Tony Lyngdoh on March 31 to discuss the amendment of Paragraph 128 will yield a positive outcome.
Paragraph 128 refers to the rules that govern the franchise and electoral rolls in the district council.
Shullai emphasised the need for a detailed discussion with all members, suggesting that a special session should also be convened to deliberate on the matter.
“We cannot delay or rush things but I believe a special session should be held so that our views and suggestions can be discussed,” Shullai said.
He also stressed the importance of forming a committee with experts to examine the issue and ensure the amendment protects future generations.
The KHADC should take this opportunity to discuss and incorporate words that will not have adverse effects in the future, Shullai added and the MDC also proposed specifying which scheduled tribes in the state can participate in district council elections to avoid confusion.
