In a bid to maintain peace and tranquility for the people living along the disputed border between Meghalaya and Assam, the Inter-State Border Coordination Committee, comprising representatives of both states, met today in Byrnihat, Ri-Bhoi.
From Meghalaya, Ri-Bhoi Deputy Commissioner RM Kurbah and DC of West Khasi Hills, Tableland Lyngwa, met with their opposite number of the Kamrup (Rural) district from Assam, Kailash Kartik and the Additional Deputy Commissioners were also present. The Superintendents of Police of the three districts, N Lamare, Herbert G Lyngdoh and Hitesh Chandra Roy, respectively, also took part.
The participants discussed the upcoming general election in Assam, which will be held in April, to ensure that peace, tranquility and harmony prevails.
It was decided at the meeting that joint patrols by police personnel will be conducted with the aim to prevent inter-state activities by criminals and extremists.
It was also decided that the authorities in the two states will notify their counterparts across the border before taking up any development projects along the disputed border region. They also pledged that no unilateral action that could harm the interests of peace and understanding will be taken.
