Two villages in Ri-Bhoi situated along Meghalaya’s border with Assam have threatened to halt the transportation of stone chips and boulders to the neighbouring state because of alleged rash driving on the part of the lorries.
The villages, Umtyrnga and Chibra, have also complained that the frequent movement of trucks has caused damage to the roads as well as pollution.
Their opposition has led to a war of words between them and the owners of stone crushers and quarries.
The villagers have received support from the Meghalaya People Social Organization (MPSO), which has urged the district authority to take action against the rash driving of the drivers and the road damage.
