Shillong, Mar 17: The Ri Bhoi Tourism & Environmental Development Forum is set to host a unique cultural celebration centred on an insect ‘Niang World Cup’, locally known as ‘Ñiangtaser’.
Ñiangtaser is a kind of insect that comes from the beetle family. It appears once in every four years and starts showing up from April and stops in May.
The two-day festival of Ñiangtaser will be held on April 8-9 at Ïewsier in Saiden near Nongkhyllem Wildlife Sanctuary in Ri Bhoi.
The festival also coincides with the FIFA World Cup, occurring every five years.
The two-day event will feature traditional dance and folk song competitions, a fashion show, and a football tournament at Saiden playground. A fishing competition will take place at Ïewsier river on April 9, with cash prizes up for grabs.
Chairman Plielad Tiewsoh invites the public to join in, promising engaging activities for all. “We’re excited to showcase our culture and traditions,” he said. Visitors are welcome to experience the rich heritage of Ri Bhoi.
